Workshops with Maya SZEKELY in Geneva - December... par AODMO
Six years of music school, four years of flute playing, folk-dance, tennis, volleyball and the notion accompanying my entire childhood that I want to become a singer or, rather, a dancer…
Ballroom dancing never really attracted me, I was searching for a style in which I can dance solo, without limitations, unleashing my fantasy and creativity. I got acquainted with bellydancing in 2000, when I was 14 years old.
It started as a hobby but I soon realised that this dance style meant much more to me. It transformed both my body and soul. It pulled me out of my introverted teenage years and almost unnoticeably corrected my scoliosis that had failed to improve despite regular therapeutic gymnastic exercises. It gave strength to my body and soul. Every minute spent with dancing filled me with self-confidence, energy, and consciousness of my value as a woman.
After having learnt the basics and acquiring confidence in their use, I headed towards creating my own style. My joint work with Arabic orchestras and the abundant experience gained abroad deepened my knowledge of the classical Egyptian style; however, it is the amalgamation of classical oriental dance with the modern styles that represents the real challenge and the opportunity of continuous renewal for me. Both lines are important, and therefore in my classes I provide opportunity for my students to get acquainted with a wide range of different styles.
In 2005, I won first prize in the Miss Hastánc Hungary [Miss Bellydance Hungary] contest, organised for professional dancers, in front of an Arabic jury. I was a guest artist and held workshops in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Poland and Korea.
I have been to Egypt six times, attending festivals and numerous workshops where I could absorb the authentic Egyptian style. In February 2007 I opened my bellydance school, MayaDance Bellydance Studio, in the heart of Budapest. I spent July 2008 in Lebanon, shooting episodes of the bellydance world competition of the LBC television channel, at which I finally took the fifth place. From October 2008, this programme was broadcast on the channels LBC International, LBC Sat, LBC Europe and LBC America for several months.
And what do I think about bellydance after 9 years? That it gives me inspiration every day. It makes me change constantly and become obsessed with a new craze every month. I can dance splendidly in classical Egyptian style to the music of an orchestra I got to know only half an hour before the performance, I like to create fusion dance choreographies to African or Bollywood music pieces, or sometimes I dance combinations to abstract or modern pieces far into the night…If you learn the clearly and logically structured system of rules that we teach in the studio, and if after some time your body accepts and easily reproduces the movements, then the world becomes yours) I wish you sufficient determination and much perseverance for this liberating journey!
